Busy Season

So this has been a pretty busy season in our life, somewhere right behind the first couple months with preemie twins.
 We celebrated several milestones this month, like 10 years of marriage and 8 years in Guatemala. We had lots of visitors and our church and youth group is growing, along with projects at the institute! The best news though is those two precious twins put their faith in Jesus this month! (Post coming soon.)
 We made new missionary friends this past month or so too. It is really great for missionary kids to get to be around other missionary kids once in a while!
{Celebrating July 4th}
 We also had interns with us for 3 weeks,
followed by an awesome youth team... the next day, haha!

Then after that team flew out we had a sweet family fly in that will be staying with us for about a week and a half.
{Working on hymnals}
We are really blessed to have so many people wanting to make an investment into the work here in Guatemala!
So there are lost of stories and victories to share. And since my power just came back on, also lots of laundry to do!

There have been some sad moments too. We said goodbye to my beautiful Labrador, Fijese, who has been with us since we got here. An irreplaceable, gift from God. Jimmy already picked us out another puppy, guard dog in the making... I think he was sad too. I really want to dislike her, but she's ok, no Fije, but ok.
{Skyping with Kiki and Papa right after she was delivered.}
 ITEM OF THE DAY:
Another milestone -
Our garage door that has been broken for the past 14 months finally got fixed! I can't open it myself when the opener is broken, so it is a big deal for me and the kiddos getting around. Jimmy called the welder several times a week for the last year... that's just how things work somtimes. He is a really good welder!

Our New Church Planting Team!

We met Tutor #4 when Domingo introduced him to us suggesting that we hire him as our Kekchi tutor. We did, almost 6 months ago. We have since become good friends with his family. Tutor #4 speaks Kekchi and Spanish. He has pastored before in several churches that were struggling. He helps them get back on their feet and then hands it off to a permanent pastor. The majority of the time he is an elementary school teacher. That is how he provides for his family. He was living in Dolores which is about 40 minutes from our house. Once we started telling him about wanting to start a Kekchi work in San Pancho, our soon to be new home town, he became very interested in helping. In a matter of months, he got a transfer with the ministry of education for the following school year (begins in Jan '12) to San Pancho and made plans to move his family.

The plan was that we would be living in San Pancho first, but he beat us! He already found a house. Jimmy helped him look. They looked together for a house that would be in a good location and large enough to start having meetings on the patio.
This house is perfect! They moved in about 2 weeks ago. Tutor #4 likes to tease me that he made it to San Pancho before I did! It really isn't that funny to me;)
This is what our visitation looks like! It is the outskirts of San Pancho... where most of the Kekchi people live. It is where we live too... the nice quiet part (where we will live... one day). The first family we visited was a contact we had made from New Horizon. They have family members there. They were very friendly, but unfortunately they will be moving to another town in a couple weeks. I was disappointed, but I know it is very slow at first when you start from scratch. Well, a couple days later, the wife visited Tutor #4 and his wife in their home. She told them about other family members and friends she had all around San Pancho and how she wanted them to go and find them to get them to visit this new church. What a great contact after all!

We do not have a start date yet. We are still looking around trying to find and meet all the Kekchi people scattered around. Please pray for our team!
We also want to work together in a town on the other side of SR in La Libertad that has called into the Kekchi radio station asking for someone to come to their area to start a church. It has both Kekchi and Spanish speaking people. We were supposed to have our first outreach in that village yesterday, but there was a manifestation by the micro (bus) drivers and all the roads were blocked.

CRAZY ITEM OF THE DAY: Out of our 3 dogs, Lucha is the best with the boys. Fije avoids them as much as possible, Atzi is a spaz and knocks them over all the time, but Lucha is very gentle and just lets them pet her. Lately we have been letting her come into the hallway so the boys can be around just her. For some reason they just started noticing her nub... you know the funny looking chopped off Boxer tail. They think it is hilarious. They point and giggle when she wags it while they pet her.
Lucha doesn't mind. She loves the attention!

Wire, Rats, & Rain

Friday morning when I was in the shower, the power went out. This is the 2nd time this has happened to me in the last 2 weeks. (We lose our water when the power goes out too since it is on a pump.) This time it sounded different than normal. I thought I heard sparks. Then the guy driving by out front campaigning for the Patriota political party turned of his recording and said over his loud speaker, "Be careful your power lines just fell, there is fire and sparks!" I though that was nice of him.
At first we thought maybe the neighbor's overgrown weeds pulled it down. The wires kept touching, sparking and bouncing around. All the neighbor kids came out to watch the show. I quickly called our dogs and got them in the house so that they wouldn't go check it out. We were very thankful they weren't in that side of the yard when it fell.

Jimmy called the power company and told them that a live wire was down and that we were without power. They said that they would come out between 1 and 48 hours to fix it. Last time we had a problem with our line (because they cut the wrong house) it took them 9 DAYS to come fix it. Our power goes off all of the time. During rainy season it's almost every day. The quality of the power lines just aren't good. I do appreciate the men trying to fix the problems though, in the middle of a storm even. Our poor service is due to what the service guys have to work with, not the men themselves.

So Jimmy was stuck at home waiting on the technicians to get there. No one ever comes to your house to fix something with all the tools and supplies they need, so we weren't going to risk it. If we missed this opportunity it could mean days without power. Anyway so there we were, all stuck in the house together... a little sweaty, but still a forced family day isn't all that bad!

It's hot without fans, but thankfully is started to rain.
Jonah and Silas got to cool off playing in the rain!
Another wonderful event of our day happened while I was sitting at the kitchen table. I had been painting a flag for the 4th of July when all of a sudden I saw a rat walk by me on its way to the dishwasher. And by walking I mean that it was moseying on by, like "Go ahead lady, what ya gonna do about it." These are some ornery rats!!! I hadn't seen a rat or rat droppings in over a week, so actually seeing one was disappointing, I had been hoping they were all gone.

In the afternoon I set up the boys' play hut.
That's the first time we done that since being back. They were thrilled.
José had given us some coconuts, so Jimmy drained a couple of those.
Later we had some pineapple/coco water smoothies. They were delicious!
Our poor doggies had to be tied up all day. They did not appreciate that.

At about 6PM the technicians showed up. They were the emergency response team, which meant they really only worked with the large power lines. They had come out since there was a line on the ground.
{There is a flat Stanley in this shot because of a project we are doing for a SS class in Japan}

They found out that our wire had burned up. None of us were sure why, but one guy said that it might have gotten too hot in the metal pipe where it comes out of our house, because of the sun. We aren't really thinking that is possible, but who knows.
They don't carry any house wire with them, so it looked like we were going to be stuck. Thankfully they were very nice and Jimmy was able to convince them to just rig something for now so that we could have power and then send the other guys later to fix it right. But we still didn't have any wire. One of the technicians had the idea to go and find a house that had had their electricity cut and we could use their wire and whenever they paid their bill the guys who would hook them back up carry wire with them, so they could replace it. So that is what they did. Jimmy had to go to the hardware store to borrow some power lines wire cutters and then the guys fixed us up.
It is definitely rigged! The lines are hanging twisted together at lower than shoulder height, but... we had power! And we are thankful Jimmy waited for them, or they would have just left. The guys that work on the smaller lines called and said that they would be by on Monday... that would have been 3 more days without power.

The technicians were really nice, even when Lucha chewed through her leash and showed up at the bottom of the ladder they were coming down! We appreciate them trying to make this work for us. They laughed since it was so late and said, "Well now you have light for when you sleep!"

CRAZY ITEM OF THE DAY: We found out how the rat got in. We replaced the windows in our kitchen with industrial screens and hopes that it would at least slow the rats down. We close the glass at night, but figured we were ok with the windows open in the day. Without the breeze you just melt. Anyway these jokers chewed through our screen in broad daylight! Like I said, ornery rats!

We Might Have Lost It

We must have thought life juggling 6 month old twin boys was too boring for us because we just added a puppy to the mix. Our parents are probably yelling at their computer screens. I know... we all do stupid things sometimes.
It honestly happened so fast it's hard to know who to blame it on. I remember late one night commenting to Jimmy that I felt bad for Lucha since she has been a little neglected since we brought home the boys. I said, "We should get her a playmate." Less then 24 hours later I run into a friend who had ONE Boxer puppy left. I call Jimmy over in the middle of the conversation about said puppy... trusting him to lead me in the right direction, and he immediately says, "We'll take her!" [This part of the story is under dispute by one of the parties.]
I named her Atzi (atz'i') which is Kekchi for "your dog"... as in I am not taking care of your mutt! Really she is a very sweet dog and sleeps through the night. She is spunky and holds her own with Fije and Lucha and is very gentle around the boys. She seems like a perfect fit!
She is about 8 weeks old and has tiger stripes, so she will look a little different than Lucha. Fije hates her, but she doesn't care much for Lucha either. Lucha loves her and they play well together. They will be the best of friends. That was who we got her for, so we are happy!

On a More Positive Note... Sort Of

Jimmy sent me pictures of the doggies so I wouldn't worry about them. I thought it looked like he had just drug Fije's corpse in the house for this one, so he took another photo of her for me!

I was planning on Jimmy taking baby stuff back with him this time, but I think most of his weight was dog bones! They were very happy to see him. Quincho is doing a great job of taking care of them. They really like him too.
My husband is so thoughtful, he even sent me pictures of all my plants. We had just repotted these Jom trees that I started from seeds. They are doing so good! By the time we purchase property, they will be ready to plant in the ground. Jimmy even weeded all my plants for me before he left!
Jimmy polyurethaned the cribs he built for me. It's water based, so it didn't smell at all. The colors in the wood pop now! I love them!!
He had to sand them one last time before he polyed them. He was moving his hand across one of the boards really quickly and the sandpaper caught on a piece of wood and pealed up a big junk of it, so when he slid his hand across it, it went into one of his knuckles... in one side and out the other... yuck! He couldn't get it out, so he called a Mennonite friend who is a nurse.
Quincho was laughing because it was so gross and Jimmy wasn't reacting very much. (He doesn't understand that the many emotions of Jimmy all look exactly the same on the outside!) Quincho also doesn't understand that you have to hold the camera still to get a good shot!
Benj was very helpful. He got the splinter/tree limb out and bandaged up the wound. Jimmy was proud of his pool of blood! This is part of the piece of wood. Benj had to remove it in pieces.

A Week From Thursday...

our work team for Santa Rita will be here. We will be working in their elementary school. This outreach will impact all the families in SR. Please pray this will help build more relationships and further our overall positive reception into the community. There is so much work to get done during their 5 work days. We will be putting up a fence around the entire school to keep animals out, kids in during school, and kids out after school. We want to paint all of it inside and out and possibly sand and re-stain the desks. We will do as much as we can until the time and money run out. Larry Boggs will be coming from Solola to help too. He is the one who originally got us this contact. We haven’t seen him in over a year, so it will be a fun week! Please pray as Jimmy finishes getting all the supplies together this week.

The dogs got a bath yesterday. Lucha loves water, but Fije hates it. Neither of them like staying outside until they dry off. They sit at the front door with pitiful faces trying to persuade us to change our minds.
Lucha was even more mad when Gregory came over and she couldn’t come see him.

A Little Chilly

What in this picture does not belong in the Petén? Jackets! It is cold! It has been raining all week. Petén has turned into a big mud pit. We weren’t sure how the weather was going to effect our studies. We ended up having a really good turnout!
Even our doggies think it’s cold and have blankets!
The boy in the red shirt and jacket went home and brought his parents back for the adult time!
We have so many men still coming to the adult Bible study faithfully. Jimmy is almost over his Dengue fever and we can’t wait to get out again in the community. There are so many people we want to follow up on. We also have a team coming Feb 5th to do a lot of work on the Elementary school. The Boggs might even be coming to help! Please pray that the momentum keeps building!

CRAZY ITEM OF THE DAY: Our ceiling is here again... or make that on our floor, all over the floor in all of our rooms. I regularly have to move everything out of my kitchen and sweep the ceiling. That’s what I get for complaining about sweeping the floor;) Can’t wait to live in a house that we built where we sealed the roof!

Sat Sun Bible Studies

We missed 2 weeks in Santa Rita plus it is still vacation time here, so we were not sure how Saturday would go. We had 17 come inside for the adult time. We are so thankful. There are several men who have not missed a week. There were about 6 that just stood outside to listen. We are so excited about what God is doing in Santa Rita.
We have 3 little light bulbs for this large room, so that is why the pictures did not turn out very good. Like New Horizon, none of the adults come until dark. There is not enough power to run the speaker. Right now we borrow tables from the school. The doors are broken on 2 of the classrooms. We have a team coming in February that will fix those, so we will not be able to “borrow” them much longer! We had several people give money towards supplies for Santa Rita. Please pray that all of this will come together. Like New Horizon we need to find our own place or at least a place where we can store stuff for now.
This is our team! These 2 guys (Carlos & Gerardo) go every week with us. Aquilino is a big help too. They are all so faithful. We are thankful that we have them to invest in.
We had 40 come for the Kids’ time.
We learned about Cain and Abel. I couldn’t figure out why Cain kept putting his offering on his head, but then I remembered where I was at... where do all heavy things go?
For some reason the kids think they have to use the same exact color as the example during the craft time.
New Horizon has been down since school let out in November for their 3 months break. Several of our teens have moved away to go to school. Our faithful ones are still coming. Please pray that we will be able to build it back up soon.
If we do not praise the Lord the rocks will cry out!
Lucha lets us know when she needs some lovin’! She doesn’t get a lot of attention when we are studying for the weekend.

Please pray for Jimmy, he has been having fever and chills. He also has a strange rash all over him. I am worried about him. Who knows what he has. Please pray the antibiotics we chose work. Plus when he is down, that is half of our team... there is too much to do around here!
